THE WAR IN IRAQ – LOOKING BACK

By Dick Mills, Harris County Republican Liberty Caucus Director

Dear Friends of the Republic:

On May 15, 2008, at the Republican Debates in South Carolina,

Rudy Giuliani attacked Ron Paul’s statement that U.S. foreign

policy perhaps contributed to the motivation for the 9-11 attacks

as the most absurd thing he had ever heard and asked Dr. Paul

to retract his comment.  Dr. Paul stood his ground at the debate

and later gave a solid defense of his statement to Sean Hannity

in a post-debate interview which sent Hannity ballistic.  Sean

Hannity (narrowly informed on so many things but vocal on all)

and Giuliani, are both ignorant of the 9-11 Commission report

that supports Dr. Paul’s comments.

For anyone who has closely followed American foreign policy for

the past 50 years or longer, it is absolutely astounding that we

were not attacked sooner and more frequently.  While it is one

thing to hold a definite preference for one’s own country, religion,

and form of government, working for, and negotiating favorable

trade agreements and international cooperation in many areas, it

is quite another to assume the position of “Dear Decider” for the

rest of the world.  As Dr. Paul so clearly pointed out in the debate

and subsequent interview, our elected leaders should consider the

impact our foreign policy has on other nations and individuals

prone to extreme behavior, asking, in effect: “What would we think

or do if other countries presumed to occupy America, build military

bases on our soil, and interfere with the operation of our country

and its government.”

Not that any of this is in any way justification for the evil acts of

9-11, or any other terrorist act by any individual or nation.  But

an interventionist attitude by the greatest power on earth can

certainly, in the minds of most reasonable people, be a catalyst

provoking the extreme fringe and unbalanced to committing such

atrocities.  And consider the fact that our national hands are not

lily white and clean of the blood of innocents.  When there are

people who will murder for the few dollars in a convenience store

clerks pockets and till, is it any stretch of credulity that some men

in positions of great power and “leadership” would provoke and

start wars in the furtherance of gains amounting to literally trillions

of dollars?

This article by  Scott Ritter, Jr., written in 2002, is worth reading in

light of these comments and Giuliani’s vicious attack on Dr. Ron

Paul, who told the American people a truly “inconvenient truth.”

Actions and policies have consequences.  The American people,

as perhaps never before, are mostly in a total state of denial and

do not want to hear the truth, being incapable of coping with the

consequences of realizing that America is not always right.

Any boy who has ever “chunked” at hornets’ nests or poked them

with a stick knows that they get highly hostile and sometimes sting

you.  Even though they are much smaller and weaker, they can

inflict agonizing pain.  The best policy is always to leave them alone!!

The “war” in Iraq is like a ten year old boy trying to “occupy” and

“pacify” a Yellow Jacket’s nest.  America’s meddlesome, bullying

foreign policy, and downright blackmail at times, has caused the

rustlings of anti-Americanism around the world for the past 100

years.

“The term, “Ugly American,” is not directed at the American people,

per se, but toward their so-called “leaders” project an arrogant,

selfish, imperialistic attitude that tells the rest of the world that

they must do what the U.S. demands or we will bomb, invade,

and occupy their countries, destroy their economies and

infrastructures, replace their governments to ones of our liking,

and generally deny them the right of self-determination and home

rule that we fought for so valiantly during our War for Independence.

Just what are these “vital American interests” we hear so much

about?  Answer:  the lust for global political power, and

somebody else’s resources because we don’t want to “damage”

our pristine wilderness by developing our own.  It’s time we obeyed

the moral Commandments and stop our national lust and stealing.

But our foreign policy seems just an extension of our domestic

tax policy which is essentially what Frederic Bastiat called “legal

plunder.”  Once successful at home, our “leaders” seem to think

that the world is their smorgasbord and they can just take whatever

they want without asking permission or negotiating a deal.

And make no mistake about it: President Dr. Ron Paul would be

no whining pacifist unwilling to defend our nation.  If attacked or

invaded, he would be first to lead in our defense, repelling

imminent invasion by his Constitutional authority to do so, and

then asking for a formal declaration of war by Congress.

OUR PURPOSE:

After decades of New Deal and Great Society social
activism ...  combined with the rapid decline in civics
and American history education in our government-run
public schools ... mixed with a growing population
of ill-informed and apathetic voters ... government at
every level in this country continues to be too big,
too intrusive and too expensive
.

Founded in 1990, the Republican Liberty Caucus
of Texas
works to advance the principles of limited
government, individual liberty and free markets

within the Republican Party and throughout Texas.
Our candidates focus is on a broad range of issues,
including education, taxation, property rights, gun
rights, free speech, federalism and the proper role of
government.

In addition to giving disenfranchised smaller-government
Republicans a home by creating incentive to stay in our
party, the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas helps
avoid a potential exodus to Libertarian,
Constitutional, and other third parties
, which would
open the door to big-government victories from leftist
candidates.  The Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas
is proud to promote the GOP's smaller-government
message
.  Our limited government, individual liberty and
free market ideas will win by inclusion.

While rolling back decades of government "nannyism"
will require a great deal of public education and
grassroots lobbying, the most important means of
changing public policy is to change public officials.
Therefore, the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas
works to elect pro-liberty Republicans to offices at
all levels
, partisan and non-partisan, in both primary
and general elections.

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas is
committed not to just electing more Republicans ...
but better ones
, as well.
