RLC OF TEXAS HOSTS BOOTH AT YCT CONVENTION:
Report Author: John Reed
March 1, 2003 -
Austin, Texas
We hosted a Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas booth at the
Young Conservatives of Texas* (YCT) Convention in Austin, Saturday, March 1st.
There were about seventy Young Conservative members present,
representing many Colleges from across Texas. Chris Allen, YCT State
Chairman, was master of ceremony throughout the day. Hosting the RLC
booth were Don Zimmerman -
RLC of Texas Executive Director, Jared Patterson -
RLC of Texas member and Political Consultant, John Reed - RLC of Texas
Treasurer, and Jason Pratt - RLC of Texas Sponsor and Austin Silver Center*
President. Don Zimmerman was able to introduce our Texas Land
Commissioner and RLC of Texas Chairman - Jerry Patterson. As always
Jerry did not let us down, with his quick wit and good history lesson on some
of the
past Land Commissioners. It was good to see that Jerry Patterson is
taking to and enjoying his most important elected office.

YCT Student Member, Don Zimmerman, John Reed, and Jared Patterson
In addition, part of the fun in hosting the RLC booth was our use of the
World's Smallest Political Quiz*. We were able to quiz 43 of the Young
Conservative Members to see how they scored in their political philosophy.
Here's how they did:
Conservative: 37%
Libertarian: 32%
Centrist: 20%
Authoritarian: 10%
Liberal: 1%
This type of
spread, with the highest political philosophical scores coming out
conservative and with the libertarian political philosophy following
close behind, is becoming a constant theme around Texas Republicans. Similar
scores were found at the
Texas GOP Convention in Dallas in 2002, although there were some slight
differences. The first difference was that the Young Conservatives scored
slightly less conservative with 37% conservative for Young Conservatives
versus 43% conservative for the Republican Delegates at the GOP Convention in
Dallas. The second difference was that the Young Conservatives scored
slightly more authoritarian and centrist with 10% authoritarian and 20%
centrist versus 4% authoritarian and 17% centrist for the Republican
Delegates.
In addition, these
political results are consistent with other research. There is a 16%
constituency base out there with our beliefs, specifically with Ron Paul type
beliefs. It’s been validated in two separate professional polling companies.
More than likely most liberals are in the Democrat Party, this means that a
quarter of the Republicans out there may be just like us. The overall result
is that the Young Conservatives really are conservative but with a libertarian
streak to them. They might call themselves independent-conservatives,
libertarian-conservatives, economic-conservatives, original-conservatives or
Goldwater-conservatives. The point is that they are pro-LIBERTY,
pro-Constitutional, and pro-limited government Republicans and they have a
future home in the Republican Liberty Caucus. We enjoyed our visit and
interaction with these students. We hope to host future RLC booths at other
conventions.
Also, not to forget our other target audience, we hope to keep growing our
organizational nest and keeping it warm for our third party brothers and
sisters out there; we hope that they will still feel welcome back in the
Republican party, with the RLC serving as the incubator.
We hope that you'll keep working out there for LIBERTY. If you come
across pro-LIBERTY Republicans or third party members with potential to join
us, please tell them about us. You, our membership and sponsors, are our
only connection out where you are. Please consider being our
representative in your local area. Send any information to:

Stay active and stay informed...

Our Purpose:
After decades of New Deal and Great Society social
activism ... combined with the rapid decline in civics and American history
education in our government-run public schools ... mixed with a growing
population of ill-informed and apathetic voters ... government at
every level in this country continues to be too big, too intrusive and
too expensive.
Founded in 1990, the Republican Liberty Caucus of
Texas works to advance the principles of limited
government, individual liberty and free markets within the Republican
Party and throughout Texas. Our focus is on a broad range of issues, including
education, taxation, property rights, gun rights, free speech, federalism and
the proper role of government.
In addition to giving disenfranchised smaller-government Republicans a home by
creating incentive to stay in our party, the Republican
Liberty Caucus of Texas helps avoid
a potential exodus to Libertarian, Constitutional, and other third parties,
which would end up weakening our thin margin over the Democrats, thus opening
the door to big-government victories from leftist candidates. The Republican
Liberty Caucus of Texas is
proud to promote the GOP's smaller-government message. Our limited
government, individual liberty and free market ideas will win by inclusion.
There is strength in numbers.
While rolling back decades of government "nannyism" will require a
great deal of public education and grassroots lobbying, the most important
means of changing public policy is to change public officials. Therefore, the Republican
Liberty Caucus of Texas works
to elect pro-liberty Republicans to offices at all levels,
partisan and non-partisan, in both primary and general elections.
The Republican Liberty Caucus of
Texas is committed not to just electing more Republicans
... but better ones, as well.
