THE
REPUBLICAN LIBERTY CAUCUS OF TEXAS eNEWSLETTER
IN THIS ISSUE:
Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas 2002
Convention:
Report Authors: Don Zimmerman and John Reed
August 10, 2002 - San Antonio, Texas
The
Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas held its annual convention on the afternoon
of August 10th at Fat Tuesday's on the Riverwalk. Special speakers at the
meeting included Suzanna Gratia-Hupp (Texas State Representative), Penny
Langford (Ron Paul for Congress Political Director), and Jerry Patterson
(Republican candidate for Texas Land Commissioner and Republican Liberty Caucus
of Texas Chairman).
Here are some of
the highlights from our Luncheon Speakers. Representative Suzanna
Gratia Hupp discussed the importance of preserving our liberties.
She emphasized that if you aren't looking for the attacks on liberty, you
won't be able to see them.
Penny Langford spoke to the group about The Ron Paul Candidate
Mentoring Program. She mentioned how Congressman Ron Paul is on a
mission to get our nation back on the track of personal liberty and the
freedom that the founding fathers enumerated in the Constitution. One of the
objectives of his mission is to encourage other candidates that have this same
philosophy.
All
across the nation there are candidates for which he has done various things to
help in their elections. From endorsements to personal appearances, he goes
the extra mile to do what he can to get more conservative, liberty minded
leaders into local, state and federal offices. You never know a young
candidate just starting out today could be the governor or Senator of Texas
tomorrow. Ron Paul and his staff have great hope that the trend in politics
will be more "Constitutionally conscious" as more citizens are being
oppressed by the abusive bureaucratic system in place.
Jerry Patterson spoke to the group about his his "lovers of
liberty truth test". Here's what you do. Ask someone you know
this question,
"Does
the Constitution grant us
any Liberty in our Bill of Rights
(or elsewhere in the document)?"
If they answer
yes, that is the wrong answer. The answer is no. Tell them,
"The
Bill of Rights merely enumerates Liberties.
We are 'endowed by our creator'. If one assumes
that government can grant liberty, then one
must assume government can take it away."
On Jerry
Patterson's website, he explains this key idea in his Op Ed: "A
Republic if We Can Keep It." Our luncheon speakers were
inspirational and motivational. Noteworthy is that all these speakers
have one common connection, and that connection is fighting for Constitutional
Liberty.
The
luncheon meeting and agenda was planned by Damaso Torres (Club
Coordinator for San Antonio) and John Reed (State Treasurer). The
event was MC'd by Don Zimmerman (incoming State Executive Director).
Bylaws were discussed and approved under the direction of Doug Lorenz (RLC
National Chairman). Officers elected for the next year included: Jerry
Patterson - Chair, Lonnie Brantley - Vice-Chair, John Reed -
Treasurer, G. Trey Summitt - Secretary, and Tammi Kannar -
At-Large.
Candidate endorsements were discussed and approved: Rick Green - Texas
State Representative and Mike Hanson - Travis County Commissioner, Pct.
4.
Recognition Awards were given: Richard Relph - Regional Chairman for
the 14th Senatorial District, Michael Franks - Regional Chairman for
the 18th Senatorial District, Harvey H. Klee - Regional Chairman for
the 24th Senatorial District, John Pankratz - Regional Chairman for the
27th Senatorial District, and James Haney - Regional Chairman for the
29th Senatorial District.
Several
other RLC members briefly addressed the group, including Bastrop County
Commissioner Don Loucks. In addition our newly endorsed candidate
for Travis County Commissioner, Pct.4, Mike Hanson, briefly spoke to
the RLC of Texas members. He
emphasized the need to focus
on the local level, to take back our liberties from the bottom up. Mike
Hanson specifically stated,
"We
can't start with Clinton and Bush. We have to start at
the precinct level -- and that's exactly what I'm doing. This is what we need
to do if we want to take our government back."
Also, several new
members joined as well, including Fat Tuesday's manager Chris Raos, who
provided excellent facilities for the 60 members and guests attending the
meeting.

SPECIAL
LETTER IN SUPPORT OF DICK ARMEY:
By Kent Snyder, The Liberty
Committee
August 15, 2002
Why is the Eastern establishment press saying such nasty things about U.S.
House Majority Leader Dick Armey? Because he is a "big shot" who has
dared to challenge the notion that the U.S. needs U.N. permission to defend
ourselves...because Mr. Armey has broken ranks with the internationalists who
insist the U.S. is justified in attacking Iraq just because Saddam Hussein
won't bow to U.N. inspectors.
Here's the gist of it. The New York Times quoted Mr. Armey on August 9th as
saying:
"I don't think that America will justifiably make an unprovoked
attack on another nation. It would not be consistent with what we have been as
a nation or what we should be as a nation."
"In my estimation it is not enough reason to go in, that he
[Saddam Hussein] does not allow weapons inspections. What if the French
decided they wanted to inspect American military facilities?"
Soon after, the magazine "The Hill" -- an establishment mouthpiece
in Washington that is widely read by politicians -- slammed "the
62-year-old conservative curmudgeon" and went so far as to suggest he
mind his own business.
Mind his own business? It is precisely the business of the majority leader of
the U.S. House of Representatives, Dick Armey -- along with every other member
of Congress -- to debate and decide if the U.S. will declare war on Iraq or
any other nation. It is the business of the U.S. Congress -- not Kofi Annan
and the United Nations -- to authorize sending American troops and equipment
into battle.
The U.S. Constitution tells us whose business it is. Declaring war is the
business of Congress. Executing a war is the business of the president.
Please contact Dick Armey and tell him you too want a full and free debate of
all the issues. Support him in his pro-American foreign policy so that we
encourage others to buck the establishment line and speak their minds...and in
so doing, put U.S. interests first.
Dick Armey is getting a lot of grief. Help us encourage him and others not to
wait until they are ending their political careers to break with political
correctness and tell us what we need to know...the unvarnished truth.

Our Purpose:
After decades of New Deal and Great Society social activism ... combined with the rapid decline in civics and American history education in our government-run public schools ... mixed with a growing population of ill-informed and apathetic voters ...
government at every level in this country continues to be
too big, too intrusive and too expensive.
Founded in 1990, the Republican Liberty Caucus of
Texas works to advance the principles of limited government, individual
liberty and free markets within the Republican Party and throughout
Texas. Our focus is on a broad range of issues, including education, taxation, property
rights, gun rights, free speech, federalism and the proper role of government.
In
addition to giving disenfranchised smaller-government Republicans a home by
creating incentive to stay in our party, the Republican Liberty Caucus of
Texas helps avoid a potential exodus to Libertarian,
Constitutional, and other third parties, which would end up weakening our
thin margin over the Democrats, thus opening the door to big-government
victories from leftist candidates. The Republican Liberty Caucus
of
Texas is proud to promote the GOP's smaller-government message. Our limited government, individual
liberty and free market ideas will win by inclusion. There is
strength in numbers.
While rolling back decades of government "nannyism" will require a great deal of public education and grassroots lobbying, the most important means of changing public policy is to change public officials. Therefore, the
Republican Liberty Caucus of
Texas works to elect
pro-liberty Republicans to offices at all levels, partisan and non-partisan, in both primary and general
elections.
The Republican Liberty Caucus of
Texas is committed
not to just electing more Republicans ... but better ones, as well.
