Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas FRIDAY EVENING RECEPTION with Ron Paul:CLICK TO VIEW VIDEO: RLC Booth and Ron Paul Speech

Report Author: John Reed

June 7, 2002 - Hyatt Regency Dallas At Reunion, Dallas, Texas

We had a strong turnout at our Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas "Friday Evening Reception".  We must have had over 200 delegates come through our Reception Suite on the 19th floor of the Hyatt.  (We did lots of advertising and passing out of flyers at our RLC of Texas Recruiting Booth at the Texas GOP Convention.)  The delegates came to hear Representative Ron Paul, former State Senator and current Land Commissioner Candidate Jerry Patterson, and former State Representative Candidate Gary GatesRon Paul inundated with standing room only crowd at Hyatt receptionThe Hyatt was a few blocks away from the GOP Texas Convention, which took place June 6-8, 2002, in Dallas, Texas.  Our reception was attended by a strong number of elected Republican delegates.

At 7PM the delegates started trickling into our reception room.  At 7:30 PM Dr. and Mrs. Ron Paul made their entrance.  By this time there was no room to walk around in the main reception suite, we had to put people in the next two adjacent rooms to make room.  Delegates were lining the hall.  Ron Paul had to give his speech twice in order to make room for the second wave of delegates to hear his speech.  The Congressman spoke once at 7:30PM and a second time at 8:15PM.  Luckily, we had plenty of cold beverages and snacks for the delegates.

Ron Paul (center) visits with TPPF Director Michael Sullivan (right)Don Zimmerman, RLC of Texas Field Director, was our Master of Ceremony.  He introduced both Congressman Ron Paul and former State Senator and current Texas Land Commissioner Candidate Jerry Patterson.  Michael Franks, current RLC of Texas Political Director and former SREC member from Wharton County, introduced former State Representative Candidate Gary Gates.  We'd like to give a big thanks to Michael Franks for helping coordinate and plan for this Reception.  We're glad to have Michael as our Political Director.  He is a walking history book of Republican Politics in Texas.

Ron Paul gave a moving speech on the need for us to protect our liberties during this time of fear, after 911.  He discussed how we need to protect our country and not allow Congress to take advantage of this crisis to push through all sorts of pork barrel and anti-liberty bills.  Jerry Patterson (center) visits with new RLC membersGO HERE: http://www.osita.com/~richard/rlc/rlc.WMV  TO VIEW THE STREAMING VIDEO OF RON PAUL'S SPEECH AT THE RECEPTION.  (Note: In the streaming video link above, there is an introductory excerpt of our RLC of Texas BOOTH at the Texas GOP Convention.)

Jerry Patterson gave a wonderful talk on the importance of growing our pro-Liberty wing of the Republican Party of Texas, by showing third party Libertarians and Constitutionalists that there is a home right here in the GOP of Texas and it's name is the Republican Liberty Caucus.

Gary Gates spoke passionately about his battle with the many bureaucrats at Child Protective Services and how he took them on and won!

Recent RLC member and Reception room sponsor Gary Gates (right) visits new RLC memberAll three of our pro-Liberty speakers were a pleasure to have as guests at our reception.  It was like a breath of fresh air to hear candidates talk with conviction and seriousness about the proper role of government and the roll we can all play to reduce the size of government.  Many of the visitors and delegates were pleased with the event, and they appreciated the closeness and relaxed environment they felt in the company of Republican Liberty Caucus candidates and leaders.

We're excited about the potential for the pro-Liberty/Ron Paul movement to help the GOP get back to it's Barry Goldwater days.  We'd like to see this type of RLC reception in every GOP Convention in every state.  We need to keep building our grass-roots network of Republicans that want to get more Ron Paul style Republicans into office.  To describe this movement, we've coined the phrase, "I'm a 'Ron Paul' Republican!"  In fact, thanks to Don Zimmerman, we were passing out stickers at the convention that said just that.  We're excited about our future and we'd like to see our country start moving in the right direction.  Currently, the only hope for that is to get more "Ron Paul" Republicans into office.

4th of July MESSAGE from our Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas - Chairman
(please forward along):

A REPUBLIC IF WE CAN KEEP IT
by Jerry Patterson

It was a sunny day in Philadelphia in 1787, and the Constitutional convention had just finished its work. A woman, watching the esteemed gentlemen congratulate themselves on their effort, approached one of the young nation's leading statesmen, Ben Franklin.

"Mr. Franklin, what kind of government have you given us?" she asked.

"A Republic, madam," Franklin quickly answered. "If you can keep it."

A Republic if we can keep it. Over two hundred years later, we are still struggling to determine whether or not we can keep Mr. Franklin's Republic.

On this 4th of July, America faces more unique challenges to our Republic than ever before. After September 11th, international and domestic terrorism has become a real threat -- one unlike anything we have experienced. Yet, apart from testing our nation's moral courage and unity, these threats are laying siege to the very foundation of our democracy: our individual freedoms.

Franklin's comment hinted at the dilemma. How can you keep a Republic together and unified, when it's very existence depends on its citizens remaining free?

The founding fathers did a remarkable job outlining the structure of our government. They knew well that government is not the source of our liberty but rather that we are "endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights." When later crafting a Bill of Rights, they were careful to enumerate our liberties, rather than grant them. They rejected the premise that any government had the power to grant liberty - knowing that if this were true, then that same government could take liberty away.

Over the past two centuries, our nation has swerved from one extreme to the other on the subject of individual liberty. But the Constitution has always provided the boundaries for the debate. If the Constitution didn't have the answer we needed, we amended it -- something which has happened only 27 times in 213 years. These amendments serve only to clarify or enhance the "inalienable" rights enumerated in the Constitution.

Now, the Constitution itself is being tested in a way no one ever thought possible. The greatest risk to our Constitution does not come from foreign governments, terrorism or unscrupulous politicians. The greatest risk to our Constitution is ignorance. Ignorance of how it was conceived, what it says and how crucial it is to our freedom.

To paraphrase Mr. Franklin, we can keep our Republic . . . only if we can keep our Constitution.

This lack of appreciation for the Constitution could not have come at a more difficult time. The fear of terrorism is driving many Americans to look past the Constitution in a search for security. Unfortunately, readily available surveillance technology and a federal bureaucracy all too willing to use it is only making the challenge to our Constitutional freedoms even greater.

The concepts of privacy and individual liberty are under attack, and only the Constitution will serve to protect them. It has withstood the test of time, and will withstand this crisis as long as Americans never sacrifice their liberty for security.

Again, Benjamin Franklin understood this fact well. "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety," he said in 1755, "deserve neither liberty nor safety."

On this 4th of July, take a moment to read your U.S. Constitution and keep a copy handy. You may need it the next time you hear a politician tell you that you need to give up a little bit of your freedom so he can keep you free.

Help Mary Ruwart in her Bid for FDA Commissioner:

I would encourage each of you on this RLC of Texas eNewsletter to help, Nationally known author, Mary J. Ruwart in her bid for presidential Appointment to FDA Commissioner. Mary has been a friend to the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas for many years. She has done much to further the cause for Liberty and Freedom. Please help her. Here's her letter below. Thank you, John Reed, RLC of Texas, Treasurer

From: Mary J. Ruwart
Subject: FDA Commissioner Appointment

Dear Friend,

You are receiving this note because you've inquired about my books, asked me a "tough question" on the Advocates for Self-Government web site, or have supported my political activism.

Because of your past interest, I thought you'd like to know that I have asked President Bush to consider me for the appointment of FDA commissioner. My goal is to help convert the FDA from an aggressive regulatory body to a market-oriented certifying body. Evidently, the President will be meeting with his advisors in the next few days to discuss this important appointment. Of course, I'm a "dark horse," but you may be able to help change that.

If you'd like to support me in my bid for the FDA Commissioner job, please fax President Bush at 202-401-1948 ASAP. You can go to my website at www.ruwart.com to find some sample language, my resume, and some of my writings on the subject. Use your professional letterhead if you have one and be encouraging, not critical.

Whether or not you feel able to support me in my bid for FDA Commissioner, I want to thank you for your past encouragement and interest. Have a wonderful day!

Our Purpose:

After decades of New Deal and Great Society social activism ... combined with the rapid decline in civics and American history education in our government-run public schools ... mixed with a growing population of ill-informed and apathetic voters ... government at every level in this country continues to be too big, too intrusive and too expensive.

Founded in 1990, the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas works to advance the principles of limited government, individual liberty and free markets within the Republican Party and throughout Texas. Our focus is on a broad range of issues, including education, taxation, property rights, gun rights, free speech, federalism and the proper role of government.

In addition to giving disenfranchised smaller-government Republicans a home by creating incentive to stay in our party, the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas helps avoid a potential exodus to Libertarian, Constitutional, and other third parties, which would end up weakening our thin margin over the Democrats, thus opening the door to big-government victories from leftist candidates.  The Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas is proud to promote the GOP's smaller-government message.  Our limited government, individual liberty and free market ideas will win by inclusion.  There is strength in numbers.

While rolling back decades of government "nannyism" will require a great deal of public education and grassroots lobbying, the most important means of changing public policy is to change public officials. Therefore, the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas works to elect pro-liberty Republicans to offices at all levels, partisan and non-partisan, in both primary and general elections.

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas is committed not to just electing more Republicans ... but better ones, as well.
