SUCCESSFUL RLC OF TEXAS WINTER MEETING:

We had a good showing out our winter meeting in January, in LaGrange. Many candidates spoke to us. The most memorable of those speakers was Rep Ron Paul. He gave an excellent talk on our liberties and how politics works in D.C.. He encouraged us all to get involved in Republican races and help good pro-Liberty Republicans get elected to office.

Some of the other outstanding speakers included:
· Jerry Patterson, Candidate for Texas Land Commissioner
· Mike Rozell, former Fort Bend Co. Judge and Candidate for State Senator SD18
· Michael Franks, State Rep. Executive Committee, Senate District 18
· Don Loucks, Bastrop County Commissioner

You can see pictures of the event at our website: http://www.RLCTexas.net/events/2002_01_19.htm

In addition, we would like to personally thank some of our members: Mr. and Mrs. J.A. & C.R. Pankratz for driving all the way up from Sharyland, TX. That's some drive! Mr. Lonnie Brantley and Jeff for the great get-away party at Jeff's Ranch, after our meeting, that was a great Barbeque. We hope to be invited back! Mr. Michael Franks for helping coordinate the meeting. Mr. David Palmquist for MC'ing the event. Mr. Jerry Patterson for lending his good name to our fine organization. Mr. Richard Relph for donating above and beyond the $25 membership fee; he donated an extra $100! Eric Dondero, our RLC founder, for helping Ron Paul get to our meeting. Most importantly, we’d like to thank all the RLC members for giving of their time and money, we couldn’t have done this with out you, and we are growing thanks to you. There is power in numbers, and our goal is to get more pro-Liberty Republicans elected to office. Thank you for helping.

Sincerely,

John Reed

HOW TO BECOME A DELEGATE TO THE REPUBLICAN STATE CONVENTION (by Michael Franks, RLC of Texas Member):

One of our goals here at the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas is to teach our members how to influence our Republican Party towards a more pro-Liberty direction. One of the ways to do this is to have as many of us, as Delegates, at the Republican State Convention.

Here’s a note, on the topic, from our very own RLC of Texas member, Michael Franks, State Republican Executive Committee Rep. for Senate District 18:

HOW TO BECOME A DELEGATE:

1. On March 12, show up where you voted after 7pm on election night or talk to your pct chair in your neighborhood if it will be somewhere else.

2. Get nominated and elected to your county or senate convention

3. At your county or senate convention get nominated and elected to the State Convention as a delegate.

4. Go to the State convention and lets have a visible presence.

Almost everyone on this list should do step 1, no excuses. Then see how far you can go. The first time I was a delegate to the county convention was 1998 the year I ran for State Rep and look how quickly and how far things can go in such a short time. (I showed up at my pct convention in 96 but was to shy to even speak or hint that I would like to be a delegate to the county convention....I have come along way from that shyness as well) So speak out and let them know you want to be a delegate.

Yes everyone on this email list needs to go to your pct. meeting after the election is over on election night, March 12. They are usually held the same place where the voting was after 7:pm when voting stops and boxes are turned in.

There they will elect a temp. pct chair to run the meeting which is usually the republican pct chairman for that pct. Get to be a delegate to the county convention. I know for some of you in larger counties they actually have a senatorial convention and then a county convention because there would be no way for example for Harris or Dallas county to have a big huge county convention...it would just be to big to put on so they have a senatorial convention which is smaller to then elect delegates to the county convention. ANYWAY. On election night at your pct. convention get elected to the county or senate convention if you are in a county that has one. Get yourself out about the room and meet your neighbors and make it known that you would like to go to the county or senate convention...dont be shy about it.

Get to know people in the room, come across as a politicaly knowledgeable person who has a passion for good government and the republican party. Let others in the room know that you would like to be a delegate to the county/senatorial conventions. Get elected.

THEN at your county or senate convention try and get to be a delegate to the State Convention. In some areas it wont be that hard in others it is like a major deal as in Houston (some people that is all they have to live for and need a life and some will actually campaign to go to state convention believe it or not) In smaller areas it is whoever shows up and wants to go basically gets to go. Many people wouldn't or couldn't take off a few days and go to Dallas and stay in a Hotel and pay $$ to go. That is the way it is in my county. That is why all politics is local as they say. If you are known in your neighborhood you get to be elected on election night as a delegate to the county or senate convention. Then if you become known in the county republican circles you will get to be a delegate to state convention. THEN every 3 years at the state convention there will be a congressional convention off all the delegates that are at the state convention to go into a room just for the delegates in a given congressional district to vote on who goes to the National convention. Since this is NOT a presidential year there will be no separate congressional convention during the state convention in Dallas. It is ever 4 years.

After we see which of us gets elected to the county convention we will go from there.

Lets focus on March 12th for now. THEN worry about state convention.
First things first.

HOW TO BECOME A DELEGATE TO THE REPUBLICAN STATE CONVENTION (by Don Zimmerman, RLC of Texas Member):

Speaking of which, several good notes have gone out concerning "Precinct Conventions" (and the entire process), the meetings that begin sometime between 7:30 - 8:00 after the pools close on March 12th. I'd like to add my notes based on attending four precinct conventions and three State Conventions.

ASAP (like today), try to contact your precinct convention chairman (temporary and permanent chairman)and see if they are favorable to adding you to a "list" they usually prepare in advance. When you vote, ask the election judge where the meeting will be. Your NEWEST voter registration card has you new precinct number, and using that number you can look up your "delegate strength", which is the number of delegates your precinct can send to the next convention (Senatorial District or County).

If you are in a small precinct, there a small chance that NO ONE will even show up for a precinct convention, or if so it might be very easy to get chosen as delegate because no one cares. If you are in a precinct with a large number (e.g. Pct# 256 with 50 delegates), expect a sizeable crowd to show up and the delegate selection to be contentious. Typical scenario -- the insiders (regulars) have a "list" already prepared – which probably doesn't include YOU. Be polite, but strongly contest the list; I recommend the following tactics:

HOW TO BECOME A DELEGATE:

1. suggest that persons in attendance at the meeting (like, YOU) be substituted in place of some names on that list.

2. request that persons on the list be verified that they actually VOTED (the only requirement for nomination). I've seen lists that included people who didn't vote (and who never showed up for the next convention) - but we didn't know to check.

3. suggest that if persons on the list did not bother to show up for the precinct convention, they probably won't show up for the next one either (part of the dirty secret is that even if only ONE person shows up at the next convention, they represent the entire delegate strength, so some people want no one else (like, YOU) to show up).

4. if you fail to get on the DELEGATE list, try twice as hard to get on the ALTERNATE list, which you will almost certainly succeed at because they'll feel guilty about stiffing you on the first list; and it's almost as good as being a delegate because there are always lots of no-shows, and YOU get to take their place.
