Republican Liberty Caucus of
Texas FRIDAY EVENING RECEPTION
during Texas GOP Convention:
Report Author: John Reed
June 7, 2002 - Hyatt
Regency Dallas At Reunion, Dallas, Texas
We had a strong turnout at our
Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas "Friday Evening Reception".
We must have had over 200 delegates come through our Reception Suite on the
19th floor of the Hyatt. (We did lots of advertising and passing out of
flyers at our RLC of Texas Recruiting Booth
at the Texas GOP Convention.) The delegates came to hear Representative Ron
Paul, former State Senator and current Land Commissioner Candidate Jerry
Patterson, and former State Representative Candidate Gary
Gates.
The
Hyatt was a few blocks away from the GOP Texas Convention, which took place June 6-8, 2002, in Dallas, Texas.
Our reception was attended by a strong number of elected Republican delegates.
At 7PM the delegates started
trickling into our reception room. At 7:30 PM Dr. and Mrs. Ron Paul made
their entrance. By this time there was no room to walk around in the
main reception suite, we had to put people in the next two adjacent rooms to
make room. Delegates were lining the hall. Ron Paul had to give
his speech twice in order to make room for the second wave of delegates to
hear his speech. The Congressman spoke once at 7:30PM and a second time
at 8:15PM. Luckily, we had plenty of cold beverages and snacks for the
delegates.
Don
Zimmerman, RLC of Texas Field Director, was our Master of Ceremony. He
introduced both Congressman Ron Paul and former State Senator and current Texas Land Commissioner Candidate
Jerry
Patterson. Michael Franks, current RLC of Texas Political Director and
former SREC member from Wharton County, introduced former State Representative Candidate
Gary
Gates. We'd like to give a big thanks to Michael Franks for helping
coordinate and plan for this Reception. We're glad to have
Michael as our Political Director. He is a walking history book of
Republican Politics in Texas.
Ron Paul gave a moving speech on
the need for us to protect our liberties during this time of fear, after
911. He discussed how we need to protect our
country and not allow Congress to take advantage of this crisis to push through all sorts of pork
barrel and anti-liberty bills.

of our RLC of Texas BOOTH at the Texas GOP Convention.)
Jerry
Patterson gave a wonderful talk on the importance of growing our pro-Liberty
wing of the Republican Party of Texas, by showing third party Libertarians and
Constitutionalists that there is a home right here in the GOP of Texas and
it's name is the Republican Liberty Caucus.
Gary Gates spoke passionately
about his battle with the many bureaucrats at Child Protective Services and
how he took them on and won!
All three of our pro-Liberty
speakers were a pleasure to have as guests at our reception. It was like
a breath of fresh air to hear candidates talk with conviction and seriousness
about the proper role of government and the roll we can all play to reduce the
size of government. Many of the visitors and delegates were pleased with
the event, and they appreciated the closeness and relaxed environment they
felt in the company of Republican Liberty
Caucus candidates and leaders.
We're
excited about the potential for the pro-Liberty/Ron Paul movement to help the
GOP get back to it's Barry Goldwater
days. We'd like to see this type of RLC reception in every GOP
Convention in every state. We need to keep building our grass-roots
network of Republicans that want to get more Ron Paul style Republicans into
office. To describe this movement, we've coined the phrase, "I'm a
'Ron Paul' Republican!" In fact, thanks to Don Zimmerman, we were
passing out stickers at the convention that said just that. We're
excited about our future and we'd like to see our country start moving in the
right direction. Currently, the only hope for that is to get more " Ron
Paul" Republicans into office.
